Nine-horse Mural Hill

¡¡

On the east bank of Li River, Nine-horse Mural Hill is a cliff rising abruptly above the water. There are five peaks linking together and standing in a line. They are surrounded by hills and only the west side faces the Li river. A 100-meter-high-and-long cliff speckled with orange, yellow and green colors, multicolored and harmonious  looks like a paingting of magical horses. It said that there are at least nine horses can be regonized. The postures of the nine horses are differet with each other, standing, sitting ,running, jumping, drinking or whinnying which was regarded as a wonder in the past or now. Because the hill was transformed by magical horses and the form of them often change, it is hard to distinguish all of the horses in this painting. There is an old saying that anyone who can recognize seven horses would be the scholar who just below the Number One Scholar, and who can reconize all nine horses would be the Number One Scholar (the title conferred on the one who got the first place in the highest imperial examination). Xuyun, a poet in Qing Dynaty , had ever wrote a poem of the mural hill saying that, ¡°Since ancient times, the hills seemed to be a painting; now, the painting likes the hills. The horses in the painting are nine heads, it is a wonder in the world.¡±  Mural Hill has been a powerful inspiration for poets and artists since Tang Dynasty.

A famous scholar in Qing Dynasty, Mr. Ruan Yuan visited Mural Hill five times and drawn paintings when he was the Governor of Guangdong and Guangxi Province. He had ever wrote a pome saying that ¡°I have aquitanced with the unique peaks for six years, but I have came here for appriciating the scenery for five times.¡±  He wrote that he would rather be a Magistrate of Yangshou County in order to be close to Mural Hill. ¡°The clear Li River was circling the hill, and nobody will not raise his or her heads to appriciate the wonderful scenery of the hill.¡± a sentence from Ranyun¡¯s poem, which describes people¡¯s expressions and manner when appreciating the Mural Hill.
